Half Moon Brewery have recently welcomed a new team member – Calum Morrison, who joins Tony and Jackie as a brewery assistant.

This month also sees the Ellerton microbrewers collaborating with Nigel Poustie from Sunbeam Ales. The two breweries will be working together to create a premium dark mild ale, in recognition of May being CAMRA’s ‘Mild Month’.

With Rudgate’s new fermenting vessels now in place the brewery has been taking advantage of its increased capacity, with specials aplenty ready to hit a bar near you. This month’s specials include Wild Mild (a nutty, rich 4% mild), Wangle Hopper (a copper-coloured 4.8% ale teeming with forest berry flavours), and Brew No. 32: Mango in the Night (a juicy pale ale brewed with mango and bursting with Citra hops).

Rudgate are also celebrating their spoils from the 2017 Rotherham CAMRA awards. Rudgate staple Battleaxe took Silver in the Best Bitter category, but top marks went to the brewery’s rich Ruby Mild, which scored Gold in the Mild category.

From humble beginnings in 2008, the rise of Northern Monk has been astronomical. What started as a homebrew project has grown through several sites and brew kits, and NMBCo are now ready to take the next step, moving the majority of their production to a new site with larger, improved facilities. Northern Monk have already scaled some impressive heights, and with more space and greater freedom, we can’t wait to see what they do next.

May looks to be an exciting month for Brew York, featuring collaborations with some amazing breweries:

  • ‘X-Parrot:’ a c7.0% tropical IPA flavoured with pineapple, passion fruit, guava, mango, grapefruit and lime, brewed jointly with Newcastle’s Errant Brewery
  • ‘Sellout Juice’: a c11% triple IPA dry hopped with an insane amount of US hops (30g per litre!), this is an exciting tie up with Hebden Bridge’s Vocation brewery.
  • Brew York’s first Imperial Stout is due to be brewed with jointly with the Tapped Brew Co. Half this batch will be released in a month or so, with the remainder being laid down to mature for a year in Highland whisky casks.

The Brew York boys will also be getting on the road towards that end of the month with a Meet the Brewer event on 31st May at the West Riding pub in Dewsbury.

Andy, Alan and co. are going from strength to strength, with Ainsty’s beers becoming increasingly widely available in venues across the city and the county. Ainsty ales are now available at York Racecourse, Mr P's Curious Tavern, and the brand-new Cosy Club on Fossgate.

If you fancy a trip right to the source, you’ll be pleased to know that Ainsty’s tap room – at the brewery site in the beautiful village of Acaster Malbis – is now open on Thursday and Friday afternoons. What better way to round off the week?

Ainsty Ales will also be putting in an appearance at York Street Food Festival on May 29th – expect tasting sessions, intelligent beer chat, and plenty of opportunity to buy.

Brass Castle are currently crowd-sourcing funds for their Crowler Project, equipping the Brewery Taphouse with a can-seaming ‘Crowler’ machine so drinkers can put takeaway beer into a versatile can. Their aim is to make their unique, seasonal or exclusive beers more available to beer drinkers across the UK, as well as starting a 'Crowler Club' to provide deals on crowler-fills of beer. Visit their Crowdfunder page to get involved.

Brass Castle are also teaming up with Bad Seed Brewery to run the fourth annual Beertown Festival in Malton from the 18th-20th May – more on that below.

The big focus for us in May is BEERTOWN - With over 50 beers from the most exciting breweries across the UK, artisan street food and live music you'll want to get yourself down to the Milton Rooms in Malton from 18th-20th May! For more information please see http://www.beertownmalton.com

We'll be kicking May off with a band with a beer launch at the Falcon Tap. On Thursday 4th May (Star Wars day) we'll be launching 'Glass Case of Emotion' -a spiced almond cherry stout that we brewed in collaboration with Wild Weather Ales - an awesome brewery based in Silchester. This beer is stunning, an 8.3% complex, dark rich and delicious imperial stout. Dessert in liquid form!

We'll be collabing with the guys from Northern Alchemy from Newcastle. Watch this space for our latest collaboration that will be launching early in June.

We're really excited about our Tap Takeover at the Tate Modern. We'll be showcasing both our latest special and our favourite core range beers, plus we'll be on hand to chat to people at the Tate Modern on Thursday 25th May.

Finally we'll be giving a talk to CAMRA on "The Pricing of Beer". That will be taking place at the Knavesmire Pub in York on Wednesday 31st May from 20:00.
